FIRST THING FIRST
A poet’s job is to write poems,
no matter how poor his poems may be.
He should jot down anything
that pops up
in his mind
in the notebook,
even at midnight.
Before reading today’s newspaper
full of bad news about crimes,
about fraud,
about atomic reactors’ trouble,
about corruption of bureaucrats, businessmen,
about explosions and bombings in Iraq and other places,
he should go out
into the garden
and count how many hibiscuses have bloomed,
and watch the flowers
as intensely as he can
and dye his mind
in the crimson
of the flowers
and scoop up
the overflowing joy
with the cup of his palms
and write.
